My first post: Bad Work Ethic

Hello Everyone,

So this is the first time I'm posting on my blog so hopefully it goes well. The point of this for me is to just let everyone know what some serious annoyances are. If you think you're part of these, then go sit in a corner and think about what you have done. There are a lot of common occurrences I've seen in the gaming industry that really 'grinds my gears'. I hate that expression but it's appropriate in this case.

Scenario time: you are a well-known developer who has worked on some great games in the past. You find yourself taking a new job offer that pays a lot more. Your first day working with the company seems great; your team seems friendly, the boss is a huge Bioshock fan such as yourself, and you geek out with everyone over in the break room. Everything seems good until you get close to the Alpha deadline. You wonder why the team is so far behind. The next day at work you notice a few team members just watching youtube videos randomly. Not only that, but they're constantly in front of each other's computer throughout the day for unnecessary reasons. There's another team member who works at a slow pace, but he works from when he enters the studio until it's time to leave.

Fun part: Which team members are hindering your progress more? The two friends or the slow worker?
This is completely opinionated. For me, I'd have to go with the two friends. I'll tell you why.

I'm not sure about you guys, but I am a slow worker. I consider myself an average programmer. I'm not special, but I'm also not the guy constantly going to someone else to solve a problem. I'm always satisfied if someone is doing the best that they can; even if it's at a very slow pace. My biggest thing is the work ethic of someone. The friends are too busy watching videos and what each other are doing all hours of the day to get some efficient progress done. It doesn't matter if one of them was a guru developer. If you're spending more time on or next to someone else's computer than your own, you're not doing it right.

Talk about lazy

This was a really short blog, but the other annoyances on the list have nothing to do with worth ethic. Bottom line: the time you have outside of work triples the amount of time you have at work. Use your play time to have fun with your bromance, or whatever you have going on there, and your work time making a great game.
